  1. Besides, Grigory Grigoryevich Orlov was the President of the Free Economic Society during Catherine times and one of the earliest propagandists of the Slavophile idea of the emancipation of the Christians from Ottoman rule. It is interesting to note that in order to rekindle Catherine's affection, Grigory presented to her one of the greater diamonds of the world, known ever since as the Orlov Diamond.

  2. As a World War II commander, Andrei Antonovich Grechko took part in the liberation of the Caucasus, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. In 1953 he assumed command of Soviet troops in East Germany, suppressing the East German workers' rebellion of that same year. He became first deputy minister of defense in 1957, under the ailing Marshal Malinovsky. Assuming the top defense post in 1967, he deftly organized the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet and other Warsaw Pact troops to suppress liberalization in that country. In 1973 he became a member of the Politburo. He is credited with modernizing the Soviet army.
He has been awarded five Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Suvorov First Class, two Orders of Kutuzov First Class, the Order of Suvorov Second Class, the Order of Bogdan Khmel’nitskii First Class, and many foreign orders, as well as medals.

  3. Another event took place on October 17, and I'd like to share some information about it. The October Manifesto (Russian: Октябрьский манифест, Манифест 17 октября), officially The Manifesto on the Improvement of the State Order (Манифест об усовершенствовании государственного порядка), is a document that served as a precursor to the Russian Empire's first constitution, which would be adopted the next year. The Manifesto was issued by Emperor Nicholas II, under the influence of Count Sergei Witte, on 17 October [O.S. 30 October] 1905 as a response to the Russian Revolution of 1905.

  4. As for Andrei Antonovich Grechko, born in a small town near Rostov-on-Don, the son of Ukrainian peasants, he joined the Red Army in 1919, where he was a part of the “Budyonny Cavalry”.

Grechko was an active member in the Communist Party, and was a member of the Politburo. As Minister of Defense, Grechko helped modernize the Soviet Army, and was greatly responsible for maintaining the strength of the Soviet state. The urn containing his ashes is buried by the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.

  6. There is a tendency in the central bank of the Russian Federation to make coins with pictures of major facts of the history of Russia. There are a lot of cities which are heroes of the Great Patriotic War. As for me, I collect such coins. So coins with the emblem of Vladikavkaz are widely spread in our district.

By the way Vladikavkaz is the motherland of my favorite football coach V.G. Gazaev who led the local team "Alania" to championship and who made my favorite team - CSKA Moscow the owner of the UEFA CUP in 2005. Also one of the best players of CSKA Alan Dzagoev was born there.
