World Food Day

WorldFood Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It marks the date of the founding of FAO in 1945. The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that "food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity."

  1. World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. World Food Day aims to heighten public awareness of the plight of the world's hungry and malnourished and to encourage people worldwide to take action against hunger. More than 150 countries observe this event every year. In the United States, 450 national, private voluntary organizations sponsor World Food Day, and local groups are active in almost every community. First observed in 1981, each year World Food Day highlights a particular theme on which to focus activities.

  2. UN-sponsored World Food Day, the annual event to draw attention to global hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, is being marked around the world.

The theme of this year’s observance is “Agricultural cooperatives key to feeding the world.”

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says the theme was chosen to highlight the role of cooperatives -- or voluntary associations of people who work together for their common benefit in improving food security and contributing to the eradication of hunger.

The UN’s latest hunger report, released this month, warns that nearly 870 million people around the world, or one in eight people on the planet, suffered from chronic undernourishment in 2010-12.

It says the vast majority of the hungry, 852 million, live in developing countries, while 16 million people are undernourished in developed countries.

  5. It is interesting that the 16th of October is not only the birthday of Ilya Lagutenko but also of his rock band Mumiy Troll. It was founded in 1983 in Vladivostok by vocalist and songwriter Ilya Lagutenko. The literal name of the band, 'The mummies' troll', is a pun on Moomin Troll, the series of Finnish children's books by Tove Jansson.
