November 19

Day of Missile Forces and Artillery

Day of Missile Forces and Artillery (Russian: День ракетных войск и артиллерии) is a holiday celebrated in Russia and Belorussia on 19 November.

 День ракетных войск и артиллерии

The holiday was first established by a Presidium of Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union decree on 21 October 1944 as Artillery day of Red Army (Russian: День артиллерии Красной Армии). The date was chosen because Red Army started a successful counter-attack in Stalingrad battle (Operation Uranus) on 19 November 1942, with much help from artillery of the Red Army. Since 1964, the holiday bears its present name. In modern Russia, the holiday has a status of memorable day.

  1. I'd like to add some information about Georgy Zhukov.

Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov was a Soviet career officer in the Red Army who, in the course of World War II, played a pivotal role in leading the Red Army drive through much of Eastern Europe to liberate the Soviet Union from the occupation of the Axis Powers and to conquer other nations, and ultimately, to conquer the capital of Germany itself, Berlin. He is the most decorated general officer in the history of the Soviet Union and Russia.
Amongst many notable generals in the World War II, G. K. Zhukov was placed at the top in the respect of number and scale of victories and his talent in operational and strategic command was recognized by many people. Many famous military leaders in the world such as Bernard Law Montgomery, Dwight David Eisenhower and Jean de Lattre de Tassigny had already recognized Zhukov's great contributions in many important victories in the Second World War.His combat achievements became valuable heritages in humanity's military knowledge, exerted great influence on both the Soviet and the whole world's military theory.

  4. The Strategic Missile Troops or Strategic Rocket Forces of the Russian Federation or RVSN RF are a military branch of the Russian Military that controls Russia's land-based ICBMs. The RVSN was first formed in the Soviet Armed Forces, and when the USSR collapsed in 1990–1991, it effectively changed its name from the Soviet to the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces.

The Strategic Rocket Forces were created on December 17, 1959 as the main Soviet force used for attacking an enemy's offensive nuclear weapons, military facilities, and industrial infrastructure. They operated all Soviet ground-based intercontinental, intermediate-range, and medium-range nuclear missiles with ranges over 1,000 kilometers. Complementary strategic forces within Russia are the Long Range Aviation and the Russian Navy's ballistic missile submarines.
