Police Day in Russia

The history of this feast had begun in 1715. Just then Peter the Great had established in Russia the service of protection of public order and gave ot a name "the police" that has the translation from Greek as "the government of a state".
 In his greeting to the Russian police force President Vladimir Putin praises Russian policemen for their high professionalism and sense of duty which make them good examples to follow in terms of decency and integrity. In his message Putin also underscores the need to boost the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies.
The cream of Russian performers will take part in a traditional Police Day concert on Saturday night.

Birthdays


Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (November 10, 1801 – September 22, 1872) was one of the greatest Russian language lexicographers. He was a founding member of the Russian Geographical Society. He knew at least six languages including Turkic and is considered to be one of the early Turkologists. During his lifetime he compiled and documented the oral history of the region that was later published in Russian and became part of modern folklore

  1. Russia is honoring its law enforcers on Saturday as words of gratitude are coming from various corners of the country on Police Day, marked on November 10th .

  2. It's important to note that Dal was interested in language and folklore from his early years. He started traveling by foot through the countryside, collecting sayings and fairy tales in various Slavic languages from the region. He published his first collection of fairy-tales in 1832 in Russian language. Some others, yet unpublished, were put in verse by his friend Alexander Pushkin, and have become some of the most familiar texts in the Russian language. After Pushkin's fatal duel, Dal was summoned to his deathbed and looked after the great poet during the last hours of his life. In 1838, he was elected to the Russian Academy of Sciences.

  3. Today Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov(born 10 November 1919) was born. He is a Russian small arms designer, most famous for designing the AK-47, AKM, and AK-74 assault rifles.
    Mikhail Kalashnikov was twice named Hero of Socialist Labour. In 1998, he was awarded an Order of Saint Andrew the Protoclete (orden Svyatogo Andreya Pervozvannogo).
    On his 90th birthday on 10 November 2009, Kalashnikov was named a "Hero of the Russian Federation" and presented with a medal by President Dmitry Medvedev who lauded him for creating "the brand every Russian is proud of."
    His quotation: "It is painful for me to see when criminal elements of all kinds fire from my weapon [...] I created this weapon primarily to safeguard our fatherland"
